“There is something about fishing in low light on a deathly quiet bed of water and listening to ‘Clack! Clack! Clack!’ of a wake bait, it’s the strike that keeps us coming back!
We could cast the snake a thousand times and still feel like the next cast could convince the fish of a lifetime!”
– Shaun Bowdler, Mudeye Lures.
Mudeye Lures Ingenious lure maker Jamie Flett founded Mudeye Lures in 1984, with his first creation coming from a healthy slab of wood he fashioned into a lure, before adding a bib he cut from the tin of his old shed wall. Since that first prototype touched water, Mudeye Lures has gone through many stages of evolvement and two sets of owners.
Rick Peel, who created the ‘Snake’ after seeing a gap in the market for an XOS wake bait for monster Murray cod, was the first to take the reins from Fletty, before new owner Shaun Bowdler stepped up in July 2016. A gun cod fisherman in his own right, Rick first carved the ‘Snake’ for his own personal use, but didn’t keep the secret hidden for long as he soon started making limited batches of these metre magnets for family and friends. With word of their pulling power spreading through the big cod community like wild fire, it wasn’t long before he was working over-time just trying to keep up with demand.
The beauty of the Snake is its simplicity, with a super slow retrieve, littered with long pauses over the top of weed beds and structure all that is needed to lure that career-defining cod. Big cod can’t seem to resist that signature sound of timber knocking on the ‘v style’ cut and its monstrous 260mm profile that would make even a Marlin lure blush.
